Duncannon Fort to reopen for Guided Tours

Wexford County Council and Hook Tourism are delighted to announce the launch of a new guided tour of Duncannon Fort this summer. The important historical site will be open 7 days, offering 5 tours daily, sharing a selection of fascinating stories from this impressive site’s history. Sitting within the newly branded Ireland’s Ancient East, Duncannon Fort’s tour will complement the existing strong heritage offering of the Hook Peninsula and County Wexford.

Duncannon Fort is an impressive presentation of a star shaped fortress perched on the side of the stunning Hook Peninsula, County Wexford, part of Ireland’s Ancient East. This historic structure has gathered countless intriguing and awe inspiring stories over its 450 year history and holds one of the best vantage points to take in the beautiful Waterford Estuary from. Share in these tales and striking views the on the guided tour from late June 2016.

Wexford County Council is proud to partner with and support Hook Tourism in the launch of Duncannon Fort tours” said Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, Councillor Tony Dempsey. “Duncannon Fort holds a highly regarded attraction and holds a unique and important position in our county’s tourism infrastructure. The Council has prioritised tourism as a key target area in our efforts to boost the county’s overall economic growth and we are confident that Duncannon Fort has not only has capacity to continue to attract visitors to County Wexford, but can also play an integral part in the roll-out and marketing of Ireland’s Ancient East tourism initiative”.

 

Hook Tourism’s Chairman David Neville confirmed that “Duncannon Fort is important not just to the village of Duncannon but to the Hook Peninsula as a whole. With our organisation’s successful track record restoring and operating the beautiful Colclough Walled Garden at Tintern Abbey as a visitor attraction we felt we could make a positive contribution to the Council’s goal of reopening the Fort. Hook Tourism is delighted that Wexford County Council were enthusiastic about the potential of our partnership. We’re really excited to see it all coming together and are looking forward to providing a quality guided tour this summer which has been designed by Mirador Interpretations.”
